What this does
Converts kilograms to pounds live. The pound is fixed at exactly 0.45359237 kg, so lb = kg ÷ 0.45359237, which gives 1 kg = 2.20462262… lb. The page opens at 1 kg and shows 2.204623 lb — the result rounded to six decimal places. Edit either box and the other recomputes as you type; the ⇄ button swaps the units and keeps the left-hand number. No server is involved, so it works offline.
How do I convert kg to lbs quickly in my head?
Double it and add a tenth. 80 kg → 160 + 16 = 176 lb (real 176.4). 23 kg → 46 + 4.6 = 50.6 lb (real 50.7). That's accurate to within a quarter of a percent, so it's good enough for anything short of a weigh-in. If you just need the ballpark, "a bit more than double" will do.

Why doesn't a 20 kg plate equal a 45 lb plate?
Because they're different weights that happen to sit in the same slot. A 20 kg plate is 44.092452 lb; a 45 lb plate is 20.411657 kg. Put one of each on either side of a bar and the metric bar is 1.8 lb lighter. The same goes for the bars themselves (20 kg vs 45 lb) and for the famous milestones — a "two-plate" 100 kg lift is 220.5 lb, comfortably more than 225 lb's 102.1 kg. If you train in both systems, convert the total, not the plate count.
Is kg to lbs an exact conversion?
Yes. Since the 1959 agreement between the US, UK and Commonwealth countries the avoirdupois pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kg, so the ratio has no measurement uncertainty; the only rounding is in the display. Worked example: 23 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 50.706320…, shown as 50.70632 — the sixth decimal is a zero, which the tool trims. For body weight, keep one decimal; 0.1 lb is only 45 g.
Where does kg to lbs come up in real life?
Telling a US doctor or gym your weight; checking that a 23 kg bag is under a US carrier's 50 lb limit (it isn't — it's 50.7 lb, so repack 400 g); reading produce and meat prices per pound in a US supermarket when you know your recipe in grams; and shipping, where a 3.5 kg parcel becomes 7.716179 lb on a US courier's form and is billed at 8 lb. For products it's the other way round — a spec sheet listing "2.2 lb" almost always started life as 1 kg.
Does the converter handle grams, ounces, or tons?
Yes. The category tabs are hidden on this page, but both dropdowns still list every weight unit: milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, and stone. Pick Grams on the left and Ounces on the right and you've got a recipe converter (1 oz = 28.349523 g). For the reverse direction with airline and newborn-weight references, see lbs to kg; length, temperature, volume and the rest are in the full unit converter.
