What this does
Enter a UTC date and time and get the US Eastern clock reading for that
same instant. The source side is the UTC zone itself and the
target is America/New_York, which means the tool picks EST or
EDT based on the date you give it. It is built for the moment you are
staring at a log line, an alert, or a flight time in UTC and need to know
what that was locally. The maths runs in your browser, offline included.
Why does UTC to Eastern need a date and not just a time?
Because Eastern is two different offsets. From the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March it is EST, UTC−5; the rest of the year it is EDT, UTC−4. So 18:00 UTC is 1:00 PM in January and 2:00 PM in July. UTC never moves — no daylight saving, no seasonal adjustment — so every bit of the variation is on the Eastern side. That one-directional stability is exactly why servers, databases and APIs record UTC in the first place.
What is 12:00 UTC in EST?
7:00 AM in winter, 8:00 AM in summer. The full spread across a day:
| UTC | EST (Nov–Mar) | EDT (Mar–Nov) |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00 | 7:00 PM (prev day) | 8:00 PM (prev day) |
| 06:00 | 1:00 AM | 2:00 AM |
| 09:00 | 4:00 AM | 5:00 AM |
| 12:00 | 7:00 AM | 8:00 AM |
| 15:00 | 10:00 AM | 11:00 AM |
| 17:00 | 12:00 PM (noon) | 1:00 PM |
| 20:00 | 3:00 PM | 4:00 PM |
| 22:00 | 5:00 PM | 6:00 PM |
How do I turn a log timestamp into Eastern time?
Take an ISO timestamp such as 2025-06-15T17:00:00Z — the
trailing Z means UTC — and split it up:
- Put
2025-06-15in the date part of the field and17:00in the time part. Seconds are not needed; they carry over unchanged. - Read the Eastern result on the right, already carrying the correct EST or EDT offset for that date.
- If your timestamp is a Unix epoch number instead, run it through the timestamp converter first to get the UTC calendar time.
Is UTC the same as Zulu time?
Yes. "Zulu" is the aviation and military name for the zero offset — the
same thing the Z suffix marks in ISO 8601 — so 1700Z is 17:00
UTC, which this page will convert straight to Eastern. GMT is numerically
identical too, but people sometimes use "GMT" to mean UK local time, which
drifts an hour in summer; GMT to EST covers that
distinction.
When exactly does the Eastern offset flip?
At 07:00 UTC on the second Sunday in March, when Eastern clocks jump from 2:00 AM EST to 3:00 AM EDT, and at 06:00 UTC on the first Sunday in November, when they fall from 2:00 AM EDT back to 1:00 AM EST. Scheduled jobs written in Eastern shift by an hour in UTC terms on those dates, which is one good reason to define cron schedules in UTC. Compare more zones at once with the timezone converter.
