What this does
Renders every page of a PDF to a picture, PNG or JPG, at 96, 150 or
300 DPI, and lays the results out as a grid of thumbnails with a
Save link under each. When there are two or more pages a
Download all as ZIP button appears and bundles them into
pdf-pages.zip. The rendering engine is pdf.js, the same code
Firefox uses to display PDFs, running inside your browser tab. The PDF is
read from memory and never leaves your device.
How do I convert a PDF to images?
- Pick the PDF.
- Choose PNG or JPG, and a quality: Screen (96 DPI), High (150 DPI, the default) or Print (300 DPI).
- Press Convert. Pages render one after another with a progress counter. Save the pages you want, or take the ZIP.
Files are named after the PDF with a zero-padded page number, so
report-01.png, report-02.png and so on sort in
page order.
Should I choose PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: every edge of every letter is exactly as rendered, which is what you want for text pages, tables, line drawings and anything you might zoom into or edit later. JPG is encoded at quality 0.92 and comes out a fraction of the size on photographic pages, at the cost of faint ringing around sharp edges. Both produce an opaque image on a white background; pdf.js paints the page white before drawing on it, so there is no transparency in either format. PDF to PNG and PDF to JPG are this converter with the choice made for you.
What resolution will the images be?
A PDF page has no pixels of its own. It is measured in points, 72 to the inch, and the DPI setting decides how many pixels to render per inch. A US Letter page comes out at 1275 × 1650 px at 150 DPI and 2550 × 3300 at 300 DPI; A4 gives 1240 × 1754 and 2480 × 3508. The longest side is capped at 8192 px, so an oversized page such as an A1 drawing at 300 DPI is scaled down to fit that limit rather than failing.
Is the text in the images still selectable?
No. Rasterising turns everything on the page, text, vectors and form fields alike, into pixels. The image cannot be searched or copied from. If you need a page you can still edit or search, extract it as a PDF with the PDF splitter instead. Highlights, stamps and filled-in form values are painted into the picture as a viewer would show them.
Is there a page limit?
The first 50 pages are rendered; a longer document gets a note saying so. Memory is the other limit. Every rendered page stays in RAM until you start a new conversion, and a 300 DPI canvas of a Letter page is about 30 MB before encoding, so on a phone prefer 150 DPI for long documents.
Does anything leave my device?
The PDF does not. pdf.js and its worker are served by this site and run in your tab. The only outside requests are for optional support files from the jsDelivr CDN: character maps for CJK text and the 14 standard PDF fonts, fetched only when a document uses one of those fonts without embedding it. Your file's bytes are never part of any request.
