WebP to PNG Converter

Turn stubborn WebP files into PNGs any app can open.

    What this does

Converts WebP images into PNG files without sending them anywhere. Your browser decodes the WebP, paints it to a canvas, and encodes that canvas as PNG — a lossless format that every image editor, office suite and operating system since the late 1990s can open. Up to 20 files per batch, 50 MB each. There is no quality slider on this page because PNG has no quality setting.

Why won't Photoshop, Paint or Word open my WebP file?

WebP is a Google format aimed at browsers, and browsers got it long before desktop software did. Chrome supported it from 2010, Firefox from 2019, Safari from version 14 in 2020 — but older versions of Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.NET, Microsoft Office, and plenty of print-shop and upload workflows either refuse the file or show a broken thumbnail. Even current Windows builds need a codec package to preview it in Explorer. Since most WebP files reach people by "Save image as" from a website, this mismatch is common: the image displayed fine on the page and then nothing on the PC will open it. PNG removes the question entirely.

    Is WebP to PNG lossless?

From the decoded pixels, yes. PNG stores exactly what the browser decoded, so nothing is re-compressed and the file will not degrade no matter how many times you save it afterwards. That said, if the WebP was lossy to begin with (most are), the detail it already threw away is gone; PNG freezes the current state rather than restoring anything. Two limits apply: output is 8-bit RGBA, and images beyond 8192 pixels on a side are capped there. Because the PNG is written from pixels, it carries no EXIF or colour-profile metadata from the source.

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

    1. Drag .webp files onto the dropzone or click to select them. Each row shows the dimensions and size once decoded.
    2. Click Convert to PNG.
    3. Use the Download button on each row. Files keep their name with the extension swapped, so banner.webp becomes banner.png.

Does it keep transparency and animation?

Transparency, yes — PNG has a full alpha channel, so logos, stickers and product cut-outs saved as WebP keep their transparent background. This is the main reason to choose PNG over WebP to JPG for anything that is not a photograph. Animation, no: the browser decodes an animated WebP as a single still, so only the first frame is written. Turning an animated WebP into a GIF or video is a different job this tool does not attempt.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

Because you are moving from a lossy, video-codec-derived format to a lossless one. A 300 KB WebP photograph can easily become 3 to 5 MB as PNG. For screenshots, diagrams and flat-colour graphics the growth is smaller, since PNG's deflate compression is good at repeated colours. If the goal is a small file rather than an editable one, JPG is the better target; if you need PNG but smaller, run it through the image compressor afterwards.

    Where do my files go?

Nowhere. Decoding and encoding are done by your own browser; no image data is uploaded, logged or stored. Close the tab and the files exist only where you saved them. If you ever need to go the other way for a website, the PNG to WebP converter does the reverse.
